We posted our highest prep score in 10 cycles and lost both phases anyway. Here's the honest version of what happened.
April 2026. We went into the cycle with nine straight prep wins and hit 6.2B in prep — the highest score we'd ever posted. We executed the playbook. We showed up. We ran the system.
We still lost both phases. Not because we played badly. Because we were matched against the biggest whale in our series — who led his state in prep and took the Sunfire Castle in the battle phase.
There's a version of this postmortem that blames the matchmaking, or claims a moral victory because of the score. We're not writing that version.
The data was clear before the battle started: they had more power, more depth, more whales. We closed the gap with coordination and prep discipline — 6.2B is real — but we couldn't close it entirely. That's not a failure of the system. That's the system working correctly and hitting its ceiling against a stronger opponent on the day.
We ran the numbers, identified the gaps, and came back in May with a 5.1B prep win and a battle win. Not because we forgot April — because we used it. The postmortem became the prep plan for the next cycle.
